How to pronounce 'walk', 'work' and 'word' correctly
Speakers of English as a second language often pronounce these words wrongly. The following verses use rhymes to demonstrate the correct vowel sounds for each word.
Walk
One saying is to 'walk the talk',
The meaning let us hereby stalk.
'Walk the talk' means to carry out
Those actions one might talk about.
So when you cannot action balk,
Talk to yourself each time you walk.
Work
Bert the Turk just loved to work,
But Bert's hard work did sorely irk
Work mates who chose tough tasks to shirk.
In private they dubbed Bert a jerk.
But on his face Bert wore a smirk,
A new black Merc, his well-earned perk.
Word
This verse tackles that tricky word,
So odd to say, it's deemed absurd.
If from its spelling sound's inferred,
Error, alas, may be incurred.
Learning by ear should be preferred,
Ignore its letters; say as heard.
Just think of that computer nerd,
Or how the pretty pussy purred.
So now your loins for action gird,
Ignore the sword; embrace the word!
